Huge Drug Abuse in Punjab
Huge Drug Abuse in Punjab
Apr 10, 2007 - 3:39:14 PM
The Chandigarh district mental health programme is throwing up increasing evidence of inhalant drug abuse. Camps conducted under the programme in different colonies show that children as young as five years are inhaling drugs like eraser fluids, solvents like taulene (used for fixing punctures), petrol and diesel.
This is happening, despite the ban on sale of correction fluids. The ban was ordered when the Chandigarh Police, faced with a large number of such cases, took up the issue with the district magistrate. The fluid is, however, remains in use, primarily owing to its free availability in neighbouring Punjab villages like Nayagaon and Dera Bassi.
Right now, 17 children of Bapu Dham and 10 of Khuda Alisher are seeking treatment for addiction under the district mental health programme. At an ongoing camp in Khuda Alisher, doctors are treating seven children, who have been regularly using whiteners as drugs.
Sixty children addicted to inhalants have been counseled at the camp. At Bapu Dham, even five-year-olds have shown a chronic history of inhalant drug abuse. Whiteners are dangerous as they are known to damage organs with prolonged exposures."
